Frequently Asked Questions
What are Character Strengths?
Character strengths are positive traits – capacities humans have for thinking, feeling, and behaving in ways that benefit oneself and others. Specifically, they are the psychological ingredients for displaying virtues or human goodness. VIA views each person as having a capacity for expressing any of the 24 character strengths in the VIA Classification. Some strengths are easier and more natural for the individual to express (e.g., signature strengths), other strengths arise in particular situations where they are needed (phasic strengths), and other strengths are expressed to a lesser degree or lesser frequency (lesser strengths).
How are Character Strengths linked to Positive Education?
Character Strengths are a core component of Positive Education, which integrates the science of wellbeing with best-practice teaching. Identifying and using our strengths builds self-awareness, confidence and resilience — key ingredients for thriving at school and in life. By helping students recognise their own and others’ strengths, educators can foster a positive learning environment where individuals feel valued, motivated and connected.
How does an understanding of Character Strengths assist in an educational setting?
Understanding Character Strengths helps educators support student wellbeing, engagement and growth. When students learn to identify and use their strengths, they’re more likely to feel confident, connected and capable. Strengths-based approaches can improve classroom culture, enhance relationships and provide a positive lens for navigating challenges, empowering students to thrive both personally and academically.
I am not a teacher, can I complete the course?
Absolutely. While many of our participants are educators, we welcome anyone connected to a school community including parents, coaches and support staff. We believe in the power of a whole-school approach: it’s not just teachers who shape student wellbeing, but everyone involved in their learning environment. Understanding Character Strengths can help you build stronger relationships, support positive behaviour and deepen your own self-awareness and personal growth.
Is there a qualification or certificate for completing the course?
After completing the Embedding Character Strengths course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Institute of Positive Education. This certifies that you have completed the course and signifies your commitment to wellbeing knowledge in your school or professional community.
All participants will also receive a comprehensive Character Strengths booklet with examples, background research and sample activities for introducing and embedding character strengths in your school.
